The Edinburgh Castle is the ancient stronghold that has dominated the Edinburgh City. It is the most attractive City for the tourists in Scotland. The Edinburgh Castle has the military garrison for the administrative and ceremonial purposes. It is visible from every direction upto ten miles. The Edinburgh Castle began to develop to a royal fortress from the reign of David I. The castle was siege by Edward I of England in the year 1296.
However, Scotland took it back in the year 1314 after scaling through rock at the night time. Such things happen few times in the history of Edinburgh Castle. The Palace building surrounding the Crown Square was developed, and the Castle was greatly extended to serve as the permanent home by the James III. Today, the Edinburgh Castle remains to be a base for the military. In the year 1980, the tunnel was excavated through the rock for allowing the military personnel to access the barracks without disturbing the tourists. It is administered by the Historic Scotland which is the executive agency of the government of Scotland. In the Castle, there are restaurants cum cafes to serve refreshment and historical displays for the tourist.
